Jeter to confront 200m in Oslo

US sprint sensation Carmelita Jeter will look to extend her competitive range when she contests the 200m at the Exxon Mobil Bislett Games in Oslo on Friday. Meet director Steinar Hoen confirmed Jeter after he discovered that injury would prevent Diamond League ambassador Sanya Richards from  competing in Oslo.
Since last year’s Berlin Championships , Jeter has been the most discussed female sprinter in the world. Her season subsequent to Berlin was nothing short of remarkable. Not only did she establish a winning streak over the Jamaicans Shelly-Anne Fraser (the Olympic and World Champion) and Kerron Stewart but she also produced a time in Shanghai of 10.64 for the 100m that ranks her as the 2nd fastest woman of all time.
Jeter race structure is very exciting for spectators especially when her patented mid-race acceleration kicks in and she storms away from the opposition. Although not as familiar with the 200m (she has a best of 22.47 from 2008), Jeter will have to maintain her form and composure throughout the race. However with the quality of her personal best in the 100m, she should open up a sizeable lead at some stage of the event.
“I don’t really know what to expect", Jater said at a press conference Tuesday afternoon in Oslo. "All I know is that when I look at the scoreboard I’m going to see something I didn’t expect. There’s always surprises” says Jeter about the upcoming 200 m event at Bislett on Friday.
Carmelita Jeter has progressed remarkably as an athlete since she joined the ranks of the legendry sprinting coach John Smith. Smith with his keen eye for technique has developed facets of her race that were previously untouched. Despite the fact that she doesn’t race much over 200m, it is worth noting that athletes trained by John Smith are usually very capable  at “over” distance races (200m and 400m).
“Every year is different with John. It’s different than from last year but, he mixes up the training methods and it varies. I feel as strong as I did last year.”
Jeter who graduated from the little known University of Cal. State Dominguez Hills is a fierce competitor and wants nothing more than to be a great sprinter not only at 100m, but also at 200m. She wants to add to her individual tally of three World Championship’s bronze medals. The first real test of this at the longer distance will be the 200m at the Diamond League in Oslo.
“Since this is an off-season I try not to stress but to run more 200 metres this year and put it all together for the 2011 season”, says Jeter.
