The new kids in the Blocks – Bislett 100m men
Both are successful products of the highly competitive NCAA system in the USA. Andre De Grasse came through University of Southern California, which has long since been regarded as a sprint factory producing such great competitors as Lennox Miller and Don Quarrie. Whilst Trayvon Bromell attended Baylor University in Texas where distinguished former students included Michael Johnson and Jeremy Wariner.
In their short careers both have shown an appetite for quality competition and have significant performances behind them already in a vocation that has barely begun. De Grasse has gold medals in the Pan Am Games to support many medals he picked in the NCAA system and World Championships (bronze in 100m and 4x100m relay) whilst Bromell has medals at World Juniors / Pan Am Juniors and very recently a gold medal in the 60m final at the 2016 World Indoor Championships.
De Grasse (22) was raised in Ontario, Canada and was coached from a young age by a former Canadian sprinter and Olympic representative, Tony Sharpe. He brings to Bislett a sense of great talent and tradition when we think of the previous greats of Canadian sprinting; Harry Jerome, Donovan Bailey and Bruny Surin.
Bromell (21) was a precious talent when in High School in his native Florida, but has matured greatly as a sprinter whilst competing for Baylor in that cauldron of quality sprinting, Texas.
These highly credentialed “Young Lions” will certainly be on the “prowl” in Bislett stadium and hungry for success. Later in the year they will again be on the hunt for gold in the 100m final at the Rio Olympic Games.
