At Bislett on Wednesday, June 10, he is chasing his first Diamond League victory – and the first Norwegian pole vault win in the history of the Bislett Games.

With a starting field missing Sweden’s Armand Duplantis, who is celebrating his wedding, the competition is wide open. Although two of the competitors, Greece’s Emmanouil Karalis and France’s Renaud Lavillenie, have personal bests that are eleven and ten centimetres higher respectively, Karalis’ second-best result is 6.08. And the French super legend Lavillenie, who turns 40 in September and is chasing his fifth victory at Bislett, has to go back to 2021 for his last jump over six meters.

But let’s dwell a bit on the Greek. He actually challenged Duplantis at the World Indoor Championships last winter and had two unsuccessful attempts at 6.25, which turned out to be the Swede’s winning height. And Karalis’ second-best result of 6.08 has only been surpassed in history by the trio Duplantis, Lavillenie, and Sergey Bubka. That places him firmly as a kind of crown prince in the event. It remains to be seen whether he can consolidate that position, or if Sondre can challenge him for that title.

However, several others see their chance, and the preliminary field includes six men with personal bests over six meters.

In addition, there is also room for, among others, Sondre’s younger brother Simen, who improved to 5.80 this winter and finished eleventh at the World Indoor Championships – in his first international senior final.

Confirmed participants:

Emmanouil Karalis (Greece)
Born: October 20, 1999.
Personal best: 6.17.
Second on the all-time world list.
Olympic bronze 2024.
World Championship silver 2025.
Two silvers and one bronze from the World Indoor Championships.

Renaud Lavillenie (France)
Born: September 18, 1986.
Personal best: 6.16.
Third on the all-time world list.
Olympic gold 2012, silver 2016.
World Championship silver 2013.
Four World Championship bronzes.
Three World Indoor Championship golds: 2012, 2016, 2018.
Three European Championship golds: 2010, 2012, 2014.
Four European Indoor Championship golds.
Winner four times at Bislett.

Sondre Guttormsen (Norway)
Born: June 1, 1999.
Personal best: 6.06.
Tied for 6th on the all-time world list.
European Indoor Champion 2023.
